Science Meets Yoga

New studies on the brain and Yoga…

http://brainblogger.com/2007/06/25/yoga-increases-gaba-levels-in-brain/

http://media-newswire.com/release_1052922.html

I like when Science challenges Spiritual practice - including Yoga. Not because Yoga wins or scores credibility points. After all, we learned recently from a study on prayer that patients did not necessarily improve when prayed for.  Read about that here or here. Not that the study would stop me from sending blessings to a friend.

Instead, I am pleased when researchers decide to put Yoga to the Scientific Method because it means there is an interest or a push to understand more deeply. If researchers didn’t give a damn about Yoga, it just might remain in the realm of mystery or smoke and mirrors and the wisdom of Yoga would benefit only those who experience the wisdom of it every time they practice. Yoga In Time Square on Military Island

I took my son to NYC on Friday. After hours of walking and shopping we ended up in Time Square. No, we did not do Yoga there.  As we headed away I noted that every time I visit Time Square, I leave with anxiety, racing mind, darting eyes, stepped on toes, and a sense of deep stress. Maybe I have not been practicing my Yoga off the Mat. Read here if that makes you curious.

Outdoor Yoga Update & What is Ganesha?

This is not Ganesha but a sweet little elephant to remind us of the Hindu Deity AKA the Remover of Obstacles and Blesser of Beginnings. I will let him walk over this post as a blessing for Thursday evenings on the lawn. Thanks to Sage for sending the animated elephant to me!

On the Summer Solstice a delightful group of Yogin showed for the first outdoor Yoga class. So did dark clouds, then rain, then thunder and finally some huge gusts of wind that took our breath away as well as leaves from the tree we took cover under.

Thank you all for attending, for braving the rain drops before they became rain storm and for smiling about it right to the end. If we couldn’t have laughed a little I don’t know if I’d have the courage to try this again. And yes, I will be there again next week and every Thursday until Labor Day.

We raised $40.00 for PETA, so far! Please, keep up the smiles and join us next week for another exciting installment of Yoga on the grass!

That brings me to Ganesha. (Sometimes Ganesh or Ganesa), a much loved deity who really looks like this:

Ganesha is the first born son of Shiva, an intellectual master, and a very popular Hindu God because he is said to remove obstacles, bless new beginnings in love, business, life, ventures, etc. Ganesha also destroys pride, vanity, and egoism and is sometimes called the Lord of Good Fortune. He has four arms with hands holding various symbols to bless and to rid devotees of obstacles. He is a man with an elephant head and rides a mouse. In some teachings the mouse respresents desire and some say it symbolizes ego, in either case, Ganesha rides upon it, keeping it under his control and using it to carry himself forward. He has a big belly, full from swallowing the sorrows of the world, big ears for listening well and a small mouth for speaking minimally. What’s not to love about Ganesha?

Call upon the symbolism of Ganesha whenever you begin a new venture, enter a new phase of life or face a challenge. He will bring us support, wisdom, courage and modesty in our successes.

Ganesha, bless our Thursday Yoga classes on the lawn, allow us to support PETA and one another throughout the summer.

Here’s a little more about Ganesh:

Ho ho Om. What’s funny in Yoga?

Plenty of times, I have tried to lighten up the Yoga room with a well timed bit of humor. The result is always pleasant, students let go of holding in the face, jaw and eyes, then a sense of ease washes over them - no matter what posture they are holding. But what if you went to Yoga class just for the laughs….

Someone, please step forward and start a club in southern Connecticut! I will sign up!

What do you think? Would you try a Laughter Yoga class?

Yoga Inc., Gurus and Golden thrones

Check out clips from a new documentary about Yoga in the USA.
http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=JohnAnthonyPhilp

John Philp does an excellent job of exposing some dark shadows cast by the commercialization of Yoga in this country. He delivers fact and opinion with humor and some cold hard truth.

Why as a Yoga teacher would I want students to see this? To create awareness. I have recently been hearing and reading about Yoga competitions. Mostly I shrug it off and think, ‘how absurd!’. One can not compete at Yoga, it is not a race or challenge or practice of perfection.

For me, Yoga is a ‘practice’ with no finish line, no winner, no score. It’s a time in the day or week that people can be spiritual, be in their bodies, move, breathe, unwind, and to take time out from multi-tasking lives to truly be present with themselves. In my humble opinion, Yoga practice is only for the benefit of Body, Mind and Soul. I laugh even hearing the financial guru in the clip calling it a multi-million dollar business. For profit Yoga “business” can and will exist in it’s own way but it does not have to preclude the practice of Yoga from the heart. I will gladly keep my priceless moments of inner peace and joy while Choudhury Bikram fattens his bank account.

I share this with you because a teacher of mine at Kripalu once shared with me the following words: “Beware the Guru on the Golden throne”.

Last words on this - practice Yoga from your heart for the greater good of yourself and all those you share your heart with. Remember the heart doesn’t hold pennies. Only the pockets of our clothes do.

Peace.
