Yoga tips for Insomniacs

July 15th, 2007

I am often asked for tips on getting to sleep. Are there any poses that will help? Is there a breath technique that will get me to sleep?

I do not believe Yoga can cure insomnia but many Yoga practices can facilitate shut eye and a good restorative repose.

I often recommend, even to my 12 year old daughter, legs up the wall pose for 15 minutes before sleep. For a how to go here.

I also recommend Nadi Shodhana AKA Alternate Nostril Breathing which balances hot and cold channels in the body as well as left and right brain. For a how to go here. As an add-on to those instructions, you can practice the breath technique -mentally. Visualize or imagine the act of breathing through one nostril and then the other. This is the practice that helped me to fall asleep during my Yoga teacher training. At night! Of course not during my classes :)

Another strategy that my daughter willingly tries is mantra. Repeating a short phrase or series of words over and over again. Yes, it is similar to counting sheep but better. You might use a Sanksrit mantra, for example, Om Mani Padme Hum. Or any simple phrase that invites feelings of calm or well being, for example, All Is Well. You can begin the mantra recitation aloud as a chant and soften the sounds until you are repeating it silently over and over again in your mind.

Here is another useful article on Yoga practices to aid sleep, enjoy it here and have sweet dreams! Another time I will write about Yoga Nidra and the practice of concious sleep…stay tuned.
